Outlook Express Tutorial

Introduction

The Basis of this instruction set is to give you access to your email using Outlook Express. However the information contained in this document can be applied to any email client that supports the (Internet Message Access Protocol) IMAP.

Fully Compliant (Internet Message Access Protocol) IMAP server implementing (Secure Socket Layer) Open SSL encryption technology for email clients such as Outlook Express or Netscape Messenger. (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) SMTP server using (Transport Layer Security) TLS and (Simple Authentication Security Layer) SASL. This allows for extremely secure login and transfer of email to and from the server as well as encrypted layers for sending and receiving email. Fully redundant SMTP daemons on multiple networks ensuring you never miss a message.

Prerequisites

Some basic computer skills and some familiarization with the Windows operating system is all that is necessary.

Objectives

- Locate the Shortcut for Outlook Express
- Enter all pertinent information referencing your server and username
- Setup all security parameters necessary for secure login, and transfer of email.
- Login to your newly created account using the Web mail interface

Configure Outlook Express

Open Outlook Express from either the desktop, quick launch, or start menu.

Click  Tools >> Accounts from the drop down menu like in the image below. Then click on the Add button and select Mail from the fly out menu.

Insert the user name provided by your COMPUTERKING representative, then click next. Enter your email address, which is your user name followed by computerking.ca For example lyn@computerking.ca after you have finished click next.
Note if you have your own domain enter it instead of computerking.ca such as me@mydomain.com

From the drop down menu that states My incoming mail server is a POP3 click on the arrow and change this setting to IMAP. Enter mx1.computerking.ca for Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server. Also enter mx1.computerking.ca for Outgoing mail (SMTP) server then click next.
Note if you have your own domain enter it instead of computerking.ca such as mx1.mydomain.com

Enter the Password provided by Computer King click Next. Now the wizard is complete however there are a few security settings that were not covered.  Click finish but follow the steps below to make sure you can log on to the email server.

Setup security parameters

Highlight the account you just created and click on the Properties button. 

Click the servers tab look to the Outgoing Mail Server section and check off the box beside My server requires authentication. Without clicking Apply or Ok you will now be able to click the Advanced tab. Check This server requires a secure connection (SSL) for both the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) and Incoming Mail (IMAP) then click Ok.

Ok we are almost done and all the hard parts are over click close and follow the last steps remaining below.

There will be a series of dialog boxes just answer each of them affirmatively like in the examples below.

On the last screen you can enter your inbox your account is now setup and you can send and receive email.
